When Phil Jackson took over as coach of the Chicago Bulls in 1989, inherited a team that struggles with one of the best players in the world: Michael Jordan. But instead of focusing exclusively on basketball star, Jackson decided to feed the team as a whole: a coaching philosophy that helped the bulls win six NBA titles.
In this video of the emergence of Jackson in "Super soul Sunday", the Hall of Fame for basketball and eleven rings author explains why not put Jordan on a pedestal above his teammates. Jackson says that it all started with a declaration inspired by a book by an American Buddhist nun: "no man is an island. No man is your only way. Do "what to wear in the lives of others will be on their own."?
Jackson often repeated this statement to his players. "Those words, sometimes, are difficult for children to listen," says Oprah. "I would then say," you understand what I'm saying? No man is your only way. We are together in this. ""
While, the media have focused their full attention on Jordan, which could easily have challenged the sense of cohesion that Jackson was building with the bulls. Then, do as Jackson prevent it?
"I had some sort of relationship with Michael."I don't buy in [God] part of his being, says Jackson. "[] Really had to ask the reduction of what it was doing."I don't want to be the leader of score. The leaders who have not won championships. ""
Although Jordan still wanted to be the leader of punctuation, I thought I could do it while still reduce his scoring average. He offered to do so, allowing the rest of the players who contribute more to the team.
Oprah's question, "did that feeling, however, that are wondering [Jordan] less [it] can be?"
"He accepted the role, that was wonderful," Jackson said.
"Super soul Sunday" airs Sunday at 11 a.m. ET on their own.
