"Juxtapose and cut very easily, reality and fiction," explained the artist born in Kenya Wangechi Mutu in an interview with the Art Newspaper. "I am aware of that is for spoons and a powerful tool to explain how to take control."
Joint and itching are a talent that Mutu has perfected in his studio in New York. His signature collages are full of tempting mix of erotica, Haute Couture, and images of nature, delicately placed in beautiful - sometimes violent - works on paper. Hybrid beings are his specialty; We see contorted creatures that are part human, part beast, it aims to explore issues of excess, the consumption and the representation of black women in art.
In October, the works of the artist are directed to the Brooklyn Museum for an exhibition entitled "A fantastic journey". Including collages, drawings, sculptures and video, the show highlights the capricious but disturbing products of your wild imagination.
Viewers can expect a strong critique of exoticism, pornography, colonialism and a plethora of other issues which is hidden under the aesthetics of Mutu. In anticipation of his exhibition, we have put together a preview of his creations dazzling misleading.
