WILMETTE, ill.--as many of the children, two brothers from northern Illinois spent hours admiring the strange and wonderful in the Guinness Book of records and wondering what they could do to get on it.
His friends tried endless jumping pogo stick. One practiced in the shower for an attempt at the strongest belch.
Then, Luke and Ryan Novosel, twins of 11-year-old from the suburbs of Chicago in Wilmette, began to count all the twins in their directory of the school and came to a surprising discovery. Pusillus Middle School, apparently, has the most sets of twins - two dozen of them - in a single degree.
"We were quite surprised," said his mother, Nancy Fendley. And simply do not brush past the current record of 16. "He is blowing away," he said.
With the help of MOM and dad, the brothers filed a request with the Guinness at the beginning of this year and then following up with birth certificates, photos and test that they are enrolled in school, expect official recognition in several weeks.
The majority of twins are fraternal. The breakdown: three sets of twins boy boy, 11 twin chica-chica systems and 10 sets of twins boy-girl. The two pairs of identical twins are girls.
Another curious fact: in two clashes are twins that bridge midnight and were born on different days.
In every way the 48 students are typical fifth grade students who are in their sports, their friends, their iPads and fighting with his brothers. But the fact that all are going to be in the same grade at the same school is unusual.
"I think that it is only statistically kind of strange," said Fendley.
An AP photographer visited the school Thursday to take portraits of couples, who came prepared with suits that match, pulse poses (think bunny ears) and wrapping his arms around the other against a Bank of bright blue lockers.
Sisters Mady and Mery drilling - Coren celebrated its status as double Dr. Seuss style with red shirts identifying them as "thing 1" and "Thing 2".
Three schools share the current record of 16 pairs of twins to a degree. Are Valley Southwoods freshman high school in West Des Moines, Iowa; Staples High School in Westport, Conn.; and secondary school South of Maine in Park Ridge, Illinois
Federal statistics show about 33 twins per 1,000 births in 2010.
The registry - if it was declared officially - could get even more difficult to overcome when pusillus students continue their school middle school, which has many other schools or perhaps more double, power on it.
"Whole school thinks that it is the greatest thing. ... It has been such a fun, creative, "Fendley said.
