FAA certifies first 2 types of aircraft for civil use

WASHINGTON - Federal regulators say they have certificate uses two types of unmanned for civilian aircraft, a milestone that is expected to the first operations of commercial aircraft approved this summer.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Friday the drones are Eagle Scan X 200 and Insitu AeroVironment PUMA. Both weigh less than 55 kilos, 4.5 m long and have a wingspan of 9 to 10 feet.

A major energy company plans to fly the Eagle of exploration off the coast of Alaska from August to inspect the migration of whales and ice floes. The PUMA is expected to support surveillance emergency response teams for monitoring and wildlife of the Beaufort Sea oil spill.

No more military use of drones in United States has been limited to police and other government agencies.
