A 6-year-old Yorkshire terrier named Joe has proved that size really is just a number.

The pooch was able to fend off a young bear that entered the home of his owner, Deborah Epstein, in Ringwood, New Jersey.

According to CBS New York, Epstein left her front door ajar and was taking a phone call inside when Joe alerted her to the intruder.

“He barks when anybody comes, but this one sounded a little more furious than usual," Epstein told CBS.

She then realized a 100-pound bear had wandered inside the house. But, luckily for Epstein, Joe's persistent bark scared it off.

"My little 6-pound Yorkie chased that bear right back out the door," the proud owner told Suburban Trends.

Bear sightings are not uncommon in the North Jersey town, and Epstein told CBS, the yearling had likely been looking for a snack.

"Basically, the bear was heading for [Joe's} food dish bowl, and you don’t touch Joe’s food dish bowl," she explained.

Fortunately, Suburban Trends reports that her home and precious Yorkie were unharmed by the incident.

In 2011, a tiny chihuahua successfully defended a cigar store in Southern California from two armed robbers.
