The Moscow metro fire: Blaze rush hour injured tens of thousands of people to evacuate forces

Moscow--fire of a rush hour in Moscow metro in dozens of Wednesday injured people, forced the evacuation of thousands of travelers and shut down parts of the network, officials said.

The fire started after a power cable caught fire in a tunnel that leads to the station, Okhotny Ryad adjacent to red square, the emergencies Ministry said in a statement.

The Ministry said that nearly 60 people sought help medical and 11 were hospitalized. Most of them suffered from smoke inhalation. Thousands were evacuated.

As firefighters went out fire, authorities shut down one of the metro lines that passes through the center of Moscow. Eyewitnesses say Moscow streets thronged with crowds who ended up walking to work.

The metro resumed service regular at noon hour in Moscow, but half an hour later officials again closed part of the line once they found a smoldering cable on another tunnel next to the Okhotny Ryad station. Normal service resumed two hours later.

Moscow metro is an essential link transport, serving up to seven million people a day. Station or line closures are highly unusual for the network, which has the reputation of being the most reliable transportation city.
