Bangladesh factory workers fall ill; Suspected water supply

DHAKA, Bangladesh - about 450 workers fell ill during their shifts at a sweater factory near the capital of Bangladesh, and officials said Thursday that the water supply was suspected.

Investigators of the Ministry of health of the Government were testing the water in the factory of Starlight sweater for possible contamination, civil surgeon of the area, said Syed Habibullah.

Diseased workers suffered vomiting, nausea and upset stomach from two hours in their changes on Wednesday. Habibullah said were mainly given saline in hospitals and those that were better left by Thursday.

The factory obtains its drinking water from an underground reservoir, said CEO Mohammad Shafiur Rahman. It has wire to a tank on the roof of the eight-story building and supplied to each plant pots. Drinking water is supplied separately from the water supply of the building, asking workers quit drinking, he said.

The factory, which employs about 6,000 people in Gazipur, near Dhaka was closed Wednesday but reopened Thursday. "We have cleaned the reservoirs during the night and now the water is safe to drink," said Rahman.

A collapse of building near Dhaka in April 1129 workers killed, injured others and highlighted the dangerous working conditions in thousands of Bangladesh garment factories.
