Tour de France 2013: 5 Things To Know For Day 1 Of 100th Edition Of Race

AppId is over the quota
tour de france 2013 Spain's Alberto Contador, second position right, rides with his Saxo-Tinkoff teammates during a training near Porto Vecchio, southern Corsica island, France, Thursday June 27, 2013.

PORTO VECCHIO, Corsica (AP) — The Tour de France begins Saturday. Five things to know:

1. THE TOUR TURNS 100: The Tour, which began in 1903, celebrates its 100th edition this year. (The race wasn't held for a total of 11 years during and around the time of the two world wars.) This edition takes riders over 2,110 miles before the July 21 finish in Paris. The festivities begin Saturday in Corsica with an airborne display by military stunt pilots before the 198 competitors set off from Porto Vecchio to Bastia for a mostly flat stage that's likely to end with a bunch-sprint finish. That's if breakaway riders don't make their mark first.

2. CORSICAN DRUTHERS: The race is visiting Corsica for the first time. The rugged Mediterranean island is known as France's "isle of beauty" and boasts sandy beaches, white cliffs, jagged ochre-colored rock formations and forests of wild olive trees. Politically, Corsica has a nationalist streak: Low-level violence targeting symbols of the French state has been going on for years, often carried out at night — apparently to avoid casualties.

3. THE STAGE 1 FAVORITES: Speedster Mark Cavendish — a native of Britain's Isle of Man who has been dubbed "The Manx Missile" — is a favorite to win the 132-mile stage. Rivals include Germans Marcel Kittel and Andre Greipel, Slovakia's Peter Sagan and Matt Goss of Australia. Look for overall title contenders like Britain's Chris Froome and Alberto Contador of Spain to try to stay out of trouble in what could shape up as a frenzied finish.

4. IS THE TOUR FINALLY CLEAN?: That's anybody's guess. Cycling officials say they have one of the most rigorous anti-doping programs in professional sports, including a biological passport system that monitors changes in riders' blood and a whereabouts system to keep tabs on riders both in season and out. Garmin-Sharp manager Jonathan Vaughters said Friday: "Cycling is the most rigorously tested sport in the world. We have our problems, but we work to solve them."

5. LANCE LURKING: This is the first Tour since Lance Armstrong was stripped of his record seven victories for doping. Tour tongues wagged Friday after Le Monde newspaper published an interview with the Texan — persona non grata to many in Corsica — in which he said he still considers himself the champion from 1999 to 2005 — a time when he said no one could have won without doping. Jean-Rene Bernaudeau, the Europcar team manager, quipped with irony: "Pretty nice from a guy who incarnates the decade that we have to forget to lecture us. ... He better not hassle us too much: It's horrible to hear that someone who stole glory, victories and money from us can now say, 'You who were subjected to it, you, too, were like me.'"

Eric Cantor referred to push immigration reform could force House members to do things like 'Read words'

House of Eric Cantor (R-VA.) majority leader told Yahoo! News' Chris Moody you're worried that the approval of the Senate's comprehensive immigration reform bill could put it in the position of having to read some words that are published in English. And it might not be the end to the widespread need for members of Congress to do the same:

"I can't tell you what is in that project's big Senate Bill and well over 1,000 or 1,500 pages that can be, and that's my concern...I don't know if you could ask much of the senators, what is in that project. "And that is my concern."

As always, you pointed out that when several members of the House were kvetching about how they should read House health reform bill, people above computational Legal Studies said that "those who practice of typography of the Congress of the United States know that the printed version of a draft law contains a significant amount of spaces including non-trivial space between lineasgrandes headers and marginsan integrated table of contents and large font. "Therefore, a simple page has"greatly exaggerates the actual length of [the] mind." CLS went on to note that House health reform bill had 363.086 words. On the contrary, "Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix" contained 257,000 words.

Two additional data points:

1. "Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix" is a book for young children.

2 "Almost one of every five members of Congress charged twice."

Suck it up, Eric.

Improved: 10 things that happened immediately after the Supreme Court of Gay Rights resolutions

The Supreme Court issued two rulings on landmark gay rights on Wednesday, striking down the law on defense of marriage — a law which forbade the Government recognize same-sex marriages - and dismiss a suit of the supporters of proposition 8 in California ban on gay marriage.

It didn't take long to make the decisions take effect. Below is a list of policies changed and events that took place in the aftermath of the sentences:

(1) Equal military benefits were offered to Gay service members

Chuck Hagel Defense Secretary announced that the Pentagon would begin immediately offering equal benefits to members of the gay and their families.

"The Department of Defense celebrates the Supreme Court's decision today on the defense of Marriage Act," Hagel said in a statement. "The Department will immediately begin the process of implementation of the decision of the Supreme Court in consultation with the Department of Justice and other agencies of the Executive branch. The Defense Department intends to make the same benefits available to all military spouses - regardless of sexual orientation - as soon as possible. Now it is the law and is the right thing."

Husband 2.) Sean Brooks was protected from deportation

New Yorker are Brooks is officially married with her Colombian husband, Steven. With DRESSAGE, however, the federal Government does not recognize their nuptials, which means Steven request for a green card as the spouse of a citizen was denied. Later were rejected more claims based on their marriage, and husband of Brooks was facing deportation to Colombia. Once the Supreme Court, however, a New York immigration court apparently stopped the deportation process immediately.

(3) Some 28.500 other binational same-sex couples also breathed a sigh of relief

As HuffPost Elise Foley reports, Brooks and her husband were not the only ones facing potential deportation due to the refusal of the Government to conjugal visa applications:

They are among an estimated 28,500 binational same sex couples who have been excluded from immigration benefits because of DOMA, which does not allow the federal Government to recognize their marriages. Ruling of the Supreme Court on Wednesday does not entirely solve the problem - couples should marry instead of partners and must travel to a State that allows marriage between people of the same sex if they do not live in one - but it is still a great victory for LGBT rights.

4.) Married Gay couples began making room in their wallets for Extra money

With ido DRESSAGE, marriages of people of the same sex living in States with marriage equality are released from the taxes burdensome requirements that left them with a ticket to me. As reported by CNN Money, will now be able to transfer assets to one another with less expenses and filing their taxes on federal income jointly. At least a couple is trying to amend their tax returns for the last three years to get some of the additional taxes that paid for the DRESSAGE.

If you support equality and the idea of the IRS having to do more work, this is a win - win for you.

Click on CNN Money for more.

(5) Present easier for some Gay couples get health insurance

In addition to the benefits of direct taxes, same-sex couples live in States where gay marriage is legal will be eligible to receive a tax deduction in the dependent's coverage sponsored by the employer, Tara Culp-Ressler high school progress reports that. Federal subsidies for health insurance through Obamacare markets coverage will also be available to these couples, as a federal deduction for spouse coverage.

Click on progress of thinking for more information about how the DOMA decision affects health for the married gay couples.

(6.) President Barack Obama may or may not have fist-pumped

7.) Glenn Greenwald decided that it would be time to move to the United States

Journalist for the Guardian Glenn Greenwald said Board on Wednesday that he considered returning to the States, now that the federal Government recognized his marriage with his Brazilian partner, David Michael Miranda. Greenwald has lived in Brazil for the past eight years, and said that it would need to consider the response outraged by some government officials to report on massive NSA surveillance programs before making a final decision.

(8.) Got engaged these guys

Paul Katami and his partner, Jeff Zarrillo, were plaintiffs in the case of proposition 8. They have been together since 1998, and on Wednesday, got hitched in front of a crowd on the steps of the Supreme Court.

(9) A Celebrity Chef Put A Ring On It

Ted Allen, host of the food network show "Picado" success, got engaged to her partner of 20 years.

"We have discussed for years," explained Joe Allen HuffPost Satran. "As bright as it is to have States allow the marriage, have always wanted to wait for the real thing, when really he was recognized by the federal Government of the country's largest on Earth."

(10) Even straight couples moves toward marriage

Couple of actor Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard had been holding off to marry officially as a protest against the DOMA. According to Bell, "I do not feel appropriate taking advantage of a right that is denied to my friends [gay and lesbian]." The decision of the Supreme Court appeared to tip scale on Wednesday.

Heather Wagner: 'Real Housewives Of Orange County' Recap: 100 Episodes Later, They Still Say The Darndest Things

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Note: Do not read on if you have not yet seen "The Real Housewives Of Orange County: 100th Episode Special."

It's a historic day, America. Together, we forged a society in which a humble reality show, initially titled "Behind The Gates," permeated the pop culture consciousness and made it to this milestone 100th episode. To commemorate this dubious occasion, I'm going to recap the anniversary special in a manner that best reveals the bizarre appeal of these women: in their own (grammatically compromised) words.

Without further ado, I present the 100th episodes of "The Real Housewives of Orange County" in 100 sound bites. Woo hoo!

"Holy crap." -Vicki

"He's pretty much keeping me." -Jo on Slade

"Don used to fill up my love tank, and now that love tank is depleted." -Vicki

"Who has a vibrator with a cord?" -Tamra

"These are not fake." -Gretchen

"It takes a tickin' and keeps on lickin'." -Lynne

"I bid $2,500 in order to participate in the 'Housewives.'" -Slade

"I did it for love." -Jo

"I'm trying to make money here, Briana." -Vicki

"It was like an altered state of reality. Where was this place where there was a grotto and moms in bikinis? It was a place I wanted to go." -Andy Cohen

"A good 'Real Housewife' is pretty, she's outspoken, she's opinionated, she has strong feelings about how she lives her life, and how others should live their lives." - Andy Cohen.

"This last season, I have to say, the girls are tools." -Gretchen

"You didn't know if Tamra was a vixen or victim." -Andy Cohen

"Game on. Who is this bitch? I'm going to slash her tires." -Tamra on Jeana

"I was trying to train her how to sell life insurance. The girl sucked at sales." -Vicki on Lauri

"I shaved, I moisturized, I had an avocado peel. I worked out in my underwear. I looked like a douche." - Slade on his first episode

"I literally think for the first months of filming I ate nothing." -Alexis

"They're housewives one day, and the next, they're famous." -Andy Cohen

"You're competing with people in Beijing and Bangalore, and they're not watching the 'Real Housewives'." -President Barack Obama

"Rolex with diamonds. I'm 40. I deserve it!" -Tamra on her birthday gift from Simon

"Rolexes are special, they mean you've made it in life. I have the same one in a different color ... I just don't wear it." -Jeana

"When I showed my [engagement] ring to Jo, she just about fell off her chair. I think she was jealous." -Lauri on her ring

"When the camera gets on, people like to show off their s***. Lauri and George for instance." -Vicki

"I don't want someone with mosquito bites. I want something." - Simon on Tamra, pre-breast enhancement

"My vagina is perfect." -Vicki

"Hold on to your daddies, girls, here comes Gretchen!" -Tamra

"It sucks being the new girl, sorry!" -Vicki

"I bet you $8,000 those aren't real boobs." - Jeana to Gretchen

"You're like, dingy." Vicki to Lynne

"Hey, honey -- just cause I'm the new girl, doesn't mean you get to tell me to shut up." - Gretchen to Vicki

"I'm bored with this. Put yourself together or you can leave." -Heather

"Biatches be cray." -Kara

"It's none of your effing business. Do you understand me? Stay out of my life. This is a letter from my attorney. It's 'cist and decease'!" -Tamra to Jeana

"I'll throw your skinny ass in the pool." - Jeana

"Just because you pop a child out between your legs doesn't give you the God right to be a parent." -Gretchen to Vicki

"You are smoking crack, Vicki. Why are you dating Brooks? He went to jail!" -Gretchen

"At the end of the day, this bird is going to win." - Vicki

"It was my dream come true, my fairytale wedding, with a storybook ending." -Lauri on her marriage to George

"The fact that Gretchen ended up being with Slade and met him through me -- that just violates girl code." -Jo

"The camera forced her to act out and show who she really was."- Slade on Jo

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Being a tourist is an innately clichéd experience -- you roam around a foreign city, toting a giant camera, posing for awkward photos and wearing one of those I heart (insert city name here) t-shirts.

There are plenty of clichéd things you can say, too -- from corny jokes, to puns, to phrases we've heard thousands of time.

Whether you think they're clever or classless, check out the ones we rounded up.

1) Czech Me Out.

tourist sayings

Found on t-shirts, shot glasses and all kinds of other tourist swag, "Czech Me Out" is a favorite play on words in the Prague souvenir industry.

2) Stay Classy, San Diego.

tourist sayings

A movie reference that has become a cliché in its own right. We know you love "Anchorman", but please don't name your San Diego vacay Facebook album "Stay Classy, San Diego." Same goes for New York and "Empire State of Mind."

3)The Bangkok jokes

We get it. They're funny -- when you're 12.

4) Jamaican Me Crazy

Top

Once a clever play on words, "Jamaican Me Crazy" is now just a Ben & Jerry's flavor.

5) Dong jokes in Vietnam

The Vietnamese currency is indeed the dong. Get the jokes out of your system before you travel.

Things to do in Philadelphia free

Philadelphia (AP) - the city of brotherly love is perhaps best known for its colonial roots, but the locals will say much more to explore in this city of 1.5 million people. Options abound for travelers free looking for things to do in and around town and beyond, and all involve no tri-corner hats and Betsy Ross flag.

It is within walking distance of the most popular tourist attractions of the city to several neighborhoods in Philadelphia and shopping districts, which abound with shops and galleries that offer lots of eye candy for the browsers and window shoppers even without opening your wallet. Beyond the horizon is prestigious Museum of art in the city, which boasts wonderful views of its famous steps. Free options for outdoor activities are a lush wildlife refuge South of the city as the Fairmount Park, a gem (1,660 hectares) of 4,100 acres of trails, streams, historic buildings and public art.

Two more stops of tourist busy city, the Liberty Bell and independence Hall, they are free to visit and located just opposite the street from one another. Both are part of independence National Historical Park, which is administered by the National Park Service. Into the Hall of independence, were signed the Declaration of independence and the Constitution, requires an input of time due to the crowds. Including tickets are available at the adjacent Center for visitors starting at 8:30, visitors should arrive early for the best choice of times, as tickets for the day often passed by 13 during the summer tourist season. There are tickets are required for the Liberty Bell, but expected to queue to enter the building where he lives.

UP TO THE ALLEY

Amid fresh galleries in the neighborhood of the old city, furniture vintage shops and boutiques of fashionable clothes is a cobbled lane charm that has hardly changed in 200 years: Alley of Elfreth's, often called continuously inhabited oldest in America. It was built to travel to the nearby coast of Delaware River of trucks and named for Jeremiah Elfreth, a blacksmith from the 18th century who built and rented several houses there. 32 Of the dead survive row houses were built between 1836 and about 1724. Unlike the near Society Hill mansions built for the upper crust of the city, the humble houses of Elfreth's Alley were inhabited by workers, carpenters and craftsmen. Many of the houses are still private property but the narrowness of the street is a good place for a leisurely stroll and some snapshots from the charming red brick houses with brightly painted shutters and colorful planters.

CRYSTAL GARDEN

"Dream garden", a glass jaw-dropping mosaic, is near the district historic but easy to Miss unless you know that it is there. The magical scene was created with more than 100,000 pieces of iridescent glass by Louis Comfort Tiffany Studios and was based on a painting by Philadelphia native Maxfield Parrish. Mosaic of 15 by 49 feet (4.5 by 15 meters) was commissioned by the "Saturday Evening Post" publishing magnate Cyrus Curtis and installed in 1916 in the lobby of its majestic headquarters facing Washington Square Park. A public uproar occurred when 1998 casino mogul Steve Wynn announced his plan to purchase the mosaic and moving to Las Vegas, and the Academy of fine arts of Pennsylvania bought the work to ensure that it will remain forever in his planned home. The cool and quiet marble lobby serves as a respite from the crowds of independence Mall and has benches to relax and feast your eyes with "Dream Garden."
